wagrain AND ITS HISTORY
Customs & tradition

One famous resident of Wagrain is Karl Heinrich Waggerl, considered one of Austria's most significant poets and writers. The author of such novels as "Brot" and "Mütter", he lived in Wagrain's Kirchboden area. Today, you can visit the Waggerl House museum in his former home.

Another tip is a visit to the Farm Museum. Here you can learn about traditional craftsmanship and rural life in times gone by.

A SONG KNOWN AROUND THE WORLD
Wagrain & "Silent Night"

"Silent night, holy night, all is calm, all is bright..." – everyone is familiar with this world-famous Christmas carol.

What everyone doesn't know, however, is that “Silent Night” has a very special connection to Wagrain. Lyricist Josef Mohr was parish vicar of Wagrain for a number of years, cared for the community's needy and is even buried at the Wagrain parish cemetery. Evidence of his time here can be found in many places throughout Wagrain: the "Pflegeerschlössl" houses a Silent Night Museum and the Josef Mohr School keeps the memory of the pastor and lyricist alive.
